The schools have started to open with 10th and 12th standard schools returning last week. Although this might be a temporary option as other states are going back into lockdown as the second wave hits the country.

During the lock down the students were really struggling to keep up with their studies as many did not have adequate access to the internet.

Over the last few months, we have provided a few phones, tablets, and even laptops for the children so they can continue their studies at home.

The picture below shows the latest phone to be handed out (Thank you to Lucie for that!

Thank you to everyone who gave old mobiles, tablets, and laptops, most we have been able to repair and are now helping the students with their studies!

The pressure is on now as exams approach. Good luck everyone

Cleft Palate an Ongoing sucess, Mapusa, Goa

Its been a long road to get here, not far to go now though
Its been a long road to get here, not far to go now though

Over the last couple of years, we have been taking all of our children to the dentist to ensure they at the very least get a check-up, which for many of them was the first time they have been in the dentist?s chair.

The dental project was organised by Lila who accompanied most of them to the dentist and showed them videos of how to brush and keep their teeth healthy. As you can imagine, with over 150 kids it took a while for all of them to be seen and treated.

Thankfully some just needed a quick clean or no work at all, although many needed a filling or two or more and some including the student below needed some extensive work.

These photos show one of our students who was born with a cleft palate and although he had a surgery when he was young, it was not fully successful. During the last year he has had a further surgery and multiple visits to the dentist to try and improve the situation. As you can see it is looking much better and has given him a boost in confidence, although there is still more to do as he still has a hole in his palate that needs to be covered.

A huge thank you to all the dentists who have helped and of course Lila for helping with him as well as all the children.

Today was the first day of school and college for the 10th and 12th standards. It has been a long wait as schools usually start at the beginning of June, the Goa govt has opted to start with these two standards and hopefully, the precautions taken will keep the children safe while they study, If all goes well then the remaining standards might start in the new year.

The good side is it will give more support to children, especially those who have been struggling through online studies. Here are just a few of the first students to receive their bags and uniforms this year.

Happy Children's Day in India

Happy Children's day to all our children and children accross India. May your day be filled with happiness, laughter and Love.

"Children's Day is celebrated across India to increase awareness of the rights, care and education of children. It is celebrated on 14 November every year as a tribute to India's First Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Fondly known as Chacha Nehru among children, he advocated for children to have fulfilled education. Nehru considered children as real strength of a nation and foundation of society."

Celebrating Children's Day
Celebrating Children's Day

We were delighted to be invited by the Purple Martini at Sunset Point, Goa for an indulgent lunch at their cliffside restaurant in Anjuna. We arrived around midday and were immediately taken inside and seated, the attentive staff quickly brought the first round of finger food, then another and another.

There was sev puri, cheese balls (which were absolutely delicious), samosas with dip, two types of puri, cucumber slices and mayo, and lots of drinks.

After eating as much as they could the children sat looking over the ocean while a man dived in the water and just relaxed. The staff was wonderful and we all had a great time. We left around 1.30 and while leaving the children received a goodie bag with chocolate, drink, and crisps to take home with them. Extras were taken also for the children who didn't make it on the trip. We would like to thank the lovely staff and owners who made it such a lovely experience.

If you're in Goa and fancy a lovely view and good food then do check out Purple Martini!

Happy Diwali, Mapusa, Goa

Yes, we are a little early still for Diwali, but we like to make sure the children get all their goodies well in time so they can celebrate Diwali without having to worry about the basics. This year we have (so far) filled 150 bags for the children and expect to fill another 20 for another group of children that we help.

The bags which have all been stitched from upcycled shirts, jeans and donated cloth contain a great selection of essential items (Rice, Flour, Dal, Sugar, Poha (Beaten Rice), Sunflower Oil, Salt, Chilli Powder, Turmeric Powder, Garam Masala, Tea Powder, Ginger and Garlic Paste, 2 Packs of Biscuits, Soap, Shampoo, Toothpaste and I forgot to add to the photos, the mosquito protection and The Face masks which were also included.

Each bag was stitched at the centre (Thanks Budhmati and Amina) and then filled a few days ago through our systematic production line (thanks to Lila, Amina and Kids). We have started giving them out and will hopefully post a few photos in the next few days.

Thank you to everyone who helped, Penny and the girls, Cash and Carry Mapusa and everyone for the continued support!

Making Food
Making Food

Our elder students are becoming more diverse in their choice of subjects, we now have students in Arts, Commerce & Science streams as well as one doing Motor Engineering and another doing Bakery and confectionery.

So hopefully in the future when I am old and grey then might feel pity on me and bake me a cake, fix my bike, sort out my accounts, cure my caner and paint me a picture

Here is one of the lads who is doing Bakery and confectionery and had an online practical session where he had to make a meal to show.
